Get rid of excuses in UX

In UX design, phrases like “I can’t” or “I’m not allowed” shouldn’t exist. If you don’t have time, money, or support, that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything. It means you need to be creative and find a solution. Don’t wait for perfect conditions – act, even when it’s tough.

1. No time for user research? Do what you can as a team

If you can’t talk directly to users, here’s what you can do:

  • Talk to your colleagues: Ask people from other departments, like sales or support, what customers are saying. They already know what bothers users.
  • Analyze the situation: Make a list of what you think might be the users’ issues. You don’t need a complicated process; the goal is to understand better what needs improvement.

2. No time for detailed UX requirements? Improvise along the way

If you can’t create a full plan from the start:

  • Prototype quickly: Create simple sketches and test them during sprints. Adjust as you learn what works.
  • Make small changes: Don’t wait for the perfect solution. Start with what you have and improve step by step.

3. No budget for research? Use what you have available

When you don’t have money for user studies, here’s what you can do:

  • Talk to your colleagues: The customer support team already knows the biggest problems users face. Ask them what they hear most often.
  • Google and social media: Search for reviews about your company or product. See what people are dissatisfied with.
  • Analyze the competition: Study other companies’ products and see what they’re doing right or wrong.

4. Do something – anything – it’s better than nothing

Don’t get stuck. If you feel like you can’t do anything, remember that you always have options:

  • Find the time: Take an hour during the day, even if it has to be early in the morning or late at night.
  • Gather information: Even a brief conversation with someone who talks to users can help.

Don’t stop!

It doesn’t have to be perfect. Take small steps and keep improving. Even a little effort is better than staying still. That’s how you’ll make your work better, even when resources are limited. The decision is yours: start now!
